Nizhoni Smiles began treating orthodontic patients in 1977 as a program of the Indian Health Service (IHS), providing much-needed orthodontic care to Native families in the Shiprock community and surrounding region. When IHS later discontinued orthodontic services, Nizhoni Smiles incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to continue that important work.
Today, Nizhoni Smiles remains mission-driven rather than profit-driven, with a commitment to making quality dental and orthodontic care accessible to the communities it serves. That commitment extends beyond treatment to education, prevention, and helping patients build healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
Our mission is to improve the health, well-being, and self-confidence of Native children and adults through oral health education and treatment.
